Morocco Itinerary: How to Plan 7, 10 and 14 Days

A good Morocco itinerary comes down to one trade-off: distance. The classic loop from Casablanca through Fes, the Sahara and Marrakech is a long road trip, and every extra city adds another drive leg. This page lays out a 7-day and a 10-day route day by day, using real drive and train times, and shows how the bookable Morocco tour packages run the same days for you.

Quick answer The short answer

Plan 7 to 10 days for a first Morocco itinerary. Seven days is enough for Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, one night in the Erg Chebbi dunes and Marrakech, but the driving is heavy. Ten days adds breathing room, Volubilis and a slower desert leg. If you have two weeks, add Essaouira and Tangier.

Key takeaways

  • The route barely changes between 7 and 10 days. What changes is pace: Marrakech to Merzouga is roughly 534 to 560 km and 9 to 13 hours of driving in one push, so ten days lets you split it. See the comparison table of every package.
  • The closest package to the 7-day route is the 7-Day Private Casablanca to Marrakech Tour at $1,511 per person for 2 to 3 travelers, with a night in a desert camp that has private bathrooms.
  • For ten days, the 10-Day Best of Morocco from Casablanca runs the same circuit privately from $1,269 per person.
  • Check the best time to visit Morocco before fixing dates. Spring and autumn suit the imperial cities, and inland Saharan summer maximums exceed 44 C.

How Many Days Do You Need?

The honest answer depends on how much time in a car you can stand.

The Shape of the Classic Route

Morocco's classic loop runs Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, the Sahara at Merzouga, the gorges and Ouarzazate, then over the High Atlas to Marrakech. Travel planners who sell custom trips say 8 to 10 days is a well-paced version of that circuit, with 11 or more days adding Casablanca, Essaouira or Erg Chebbi.

The numbers explain why. Fes to Merzouga is 457 km and about 7 h 14 min of driving per Rome2Rio. Merzouga back to Marrakech is 534.1 km and about 9 h 27 min per Rome2Rio, while KimKim quotes 560 km and 10 to 13 hours. Squeeze that into a week and you spend two full days behind glass. The how to choose a package section on the homepage helps you pick one.

  • 5 days or fewer: pick either the imperial north or a 3-day desert loop from Marrakech, not both.
  • 7 days: the full loop, with long drive days. Doable, not relaxed.
  • 10 days: the same loop with a full day in Fes, a slower desert leg and time for Volubilis.
  • 14 days: add Essaouira on the coast and Tangier in the north.

Train, Car or Package

The north is easy by rail. ONCF runs about 2,200 km of track and carried 52.8 million passengers in 2023. Casablanca to Rabat takes about 57 minutes by train, Casablanca to Marrakech about 2 h 39 min, and the Al Boraq high-speed train covers Tangier to Casablanca in about 2 h 10 to 2 h 17 min at up to 320 km/h. Fes to Meknes is about 37 minutes by train per Rome2Rio.

The south is not. There is no rail to Ouarzazate, Merzouga or anywhere east and south of the Atlas, which depend on Supratours buses and Grand taxis. Marrakech to Merzouga by public transport means a long bus day, and Merzouga has a single ATM at its north entrance. That is why the 7 to 11 day packages run the desert legs by vehicle with a driver. Compare the included transport in the 7 to 11 day packages before deciding.

A 7-Day Morocco Itinerary

This is the fastest complete loop. It follows the same arc as the bookable 7-day tours, which run it with a driver so the long legs cost you nothing but seat time.

  1. Day 1

    Casablanca

Fly into Casablanca Mohammed V, which served 10,449,372 passengers in 2024. An hourly Al Bidaoui train runs from the airport from 04:00 to 23:00. Keep today light: the Hassan II Mosque by the sea is the one fixed appointment. The city itself is Morocco's largest at 3,218,036 residents in 2024, so save your walking legs for Fes.

  2. Day 2

    Casablanca to Rabat

An easy start. Rabat is 90.5 km away, about 1 hour by road or 57 minutes on an hourly train. The capital holds the Hassan Tower, begun in 1191 and abandoned in 1199 at 44 m against a planned height of at least 64 m, plus the Kasbah of the Udayas, built in 1150 to 1151, and the Chellah Roman ruins with their nesting storks. Rabat was inscribed by UNESCO in 2012.

  3. Day 3

    Rabat to Chefchaouen

The longest northbound leg: 244.3 km and about 3 h 45 min by road into the Rif Mountains. Chefchaouen sits at 564 m and was founded in 1471. The blue walls are its draw, and each spring the local government hands out paintbrushes to residents to keep them that way. Arrive by mid-afternoon and spend the evening in the medina.

  4. Day 4

    Chefchaouen to Fes via Volubilis

Chefchaouen to Fes is 194.3 km and about 3 h 28 min by direct road per Rome2Rio, and other guides say about 4 hours, before the stop at the Roman site of Volubilis, inscribed by UNESCO in 1997. It is 27.7 km and about 29 min from Meknes per Rome2Rio, though one guide says about 20 km, and only half the 42-hectare site is excavated. Admission is 70 MAD for adults and 30 MAD for under 12s, open 8:00 to 19:30 in summer and 8:00 to 17:30 in winter. Fes follows, founded in 789 CE.

  5. Day 5

    Fes to Merzouga

The big driving day: 457 km and about 7 h 14 min per Rome2Rio, or 463 km and about 7 hours per KimKim. The route passes Ifrane about an hour from Fes and the Ziz Valley two hours beyond it, and drops to the Sahara. Erg Chebbi's dunes rise 150 m above the plain and stretch about 28 km north to south. Camel or 4x4 transfer to a camp at the dune edge takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. Sleep in the desert tonight.

  6. Day 6

Merzouga to the Todra and Dades Gorges

Sunrise on the dunes, then west. Merzouga to Tinghir is 191.2 km, about 3 h 2 min, with the Todra Gorge's walls reaching 300 to 400 m depending on the source. Continue through the Dades Valley or push to Ouarzazate, another 162.8 to 164 km and 2 h 42 min from Tinghir. Either stop works. A slower ten-day version of this day is where the extra time pays off.

  7. Day 7

Ait Ben Haddou and over the Atlas to Marrakech

Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO ksar of rammed earth since 1987, stands 171.4 km and about 2 h 58 min from Marrakech, with films shot there including Gladiator (2000). From there the Tizi n'Tichka pass climbs to 2,205 m by GPS, though the sign at the top reads 2,260 m, and drops into Marrakech. Fly out of Marrakesh Menara, which handled about 9.3 million passengers in 2024. If a week is all you have and you would rather not drive it, the 7-Day Private Casablanca to Marrakech Tour runs this arc for $1,511 per person for 2 to 3 travelers, with an entrance fee included and a night in a desert camp with private bathrooms. Its meal coverage is listed as unclear, so ask before booking. A variant that starts in the north is the 7-Day Tangier to Marrakech Tour at $1,537 per person.

A 10-Day Morocco Itinerary

The same loop, unpacked. Three extra days buy a full Fes day, a whole day in the dunes and a two-day crossing of the south instead of one brutal drive.

  1. Day 1

    Casablanca

Arrive at Casablanca Mohammed V and take the Hassan II Mosque tour. Guided visits run at 9, 10, 11, 12 and 15, and 16 in summer, per the Barcelo guide, at a foreign adult price of 140 MAD on the official foundation page, with an earlier 130 MAD figure still circulating in guides. The minaret stands 210 m by Wikipedia's measure, 200 m by Barcelo's.

  2. Day 2

    Rabat

A 57-minute train, hourly, or an hour by car over 90.5 km. With a full day you can add Chellah, where Roman Sala Colonia ruins meet Marinid walls whose main gate was completed in 1339, and the Andalusian Garden created between 1915 and 1918. The Mausoleum of Mohammed V was completed in 1971.

  3. Day 3

    Chefchaouen

244.3 km and about 3 h 45 min by road from Rabat. Two nights here is the luxury a 7-day route cannot afford. If you want a walk, the Akchour small cascades are 2 km one way, about 40 minutes, and the Grand Cascade 6 km one way.

  4. Day 4

To Fes via Volubilis and Meknes

South from Chefchaouen, 194.3 km and about 3 h 28 min by direct road per Rome2Rio, stopping at Volubilis, about 20 to 28 km from Meknes, where official guided tours last about one hour and shade is scarce in summer. A detour through Meknes, UNESCO-listed since 1996, shows Bab Mansour, finished in 1732 with marble columns probably taken from Volubilis itself. Overnight in Fes.

  5. Day 5

    Fes

A full day in a medina founded in 789 CE, in a city of 1,256,172 residents in 2024. Fez el-Jdid's Royal Palace covers about 80 hectares, and the Mellah was Morocco's first designated Jewish quarter. Take a licensed guide. The medina is dense. Fez-Saiss Airport sits roughly 15 km south of the old city if you need it later.

  6. Day 6

Fes to Merzouga via Ifrane and Midelt

457 km and about 7 h 14 min of driving per Rome2Rio, best broken with a stop at Midelt at 1,521 m. Ifrane lies an hour from Fes and the Ziz Valley two hours past it. Arrive at Merzouga village, 55 to 60 km from Erfoud and roughly 50 km from the Algerian border, in time for the sunset camel trek to camp.

  7. Day 7

    The dunes of Erg Chebbi

A whole day in the desert, which no 7-day itinerary can give you. The dune field runs over 100 square km toward the Algerian border, and the far edge is about 5 km straight across from the main sunset dune. Sunrise is worth the alarm. Options around the village include quad tours from 400 dirhams per person and 4WD circuits around 800 dirhams for 2 hours. Khamlia, 7 km away, hosts Gnawa musicians descended from Senegalese families.

  8. Day 8

    Merzouga to the gorges

Leave the sand and head west. Merzouga to Tinghir is 191.2 km and about 3 h 2 min, with the Todra Gorge's walls of 300 to 400 m a short detour. Continue to the Dades Valley for the night. Fossil shops in Erfoud, 55 to 60 km north of Merzouga, sell trilobites from a seabed that lay under water 500 million years ago.

  9. Day 9

Dades to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou

A gentler day. Ouarzazate is film country, with studios on its edge, and Ait Ben Haddou is a short drive away. The ksar, UNESCO-listed in 1987, needs constant maintenance because rain eats its earthen walls, and only a few families still live inside.

  10. Day 10

Over the Tizi n'Tichka to Marrakech

The pass crosses the High Atlas at 2,205 m by GPS, with the sign claiming 2,260 m, and the road runs 198.3 km and about 3 h 24 min from Ouarzazate to Marrakech, though count closer to 5 hours with photo stops. Marrakech's medina, UNESCO-listed in 1985, has 18 souks employing over 40,000 people, and the Jemaa el-Fnaa square runs late. Fly home from Marrakesh Menara or take the 2 h 39 min train back to Casablanca. Bookable versions of this ten-day shape: the 10-Day Best of Morocco from Casablanca is private from $1,269 per person, a price that likely belongs to its tour-only tier. It has four tiers up to luxury, and entrance fees are included on the accommodation tiers. The 10-Day Morocco Desert Tour via Imperial Cities runs the same loop in a group of up to 14 at $2,403 per person, with breakfast and dinner included, lunch and monument entrances not included, and the booking platform adding $302 in extra charges at checkout. For a day-by-day accounting of what each listing covers, see what a package includes.

Two Weeks: Adding Essaouira and Tangier

A 14-day Morocco itinerary adds the Atlantic coast at Essaouira and the northern port of Tangier to the classic loop. Both fit as breaks in the long drive legs rather than as new detours.

Where the Extra Days Go

Essaouira sits 176.1 km from Marrakech, about 2 h 24 min by road, and the coach takes about 3 hours for 80 dirhams plus 5 dirhams per stowed bag. That makes it an easy two-night add-on before or after Marrakech. The medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, and modern Essaouira was laid out in the 1760s by the French engineer Theodore Cornut. Mogador island lies about 1.5 km offshore but cannot be visited without official authorisation.

Tangier anchors the north. The Al Boraq train covers Tangier to Casablanca in about 2 h 10 to 2 h 17 min against 3 h 30 min by road, so you can start a two-week route in Tangier, ride the fast train south and pick up the classic loop in Casablanca. From Tangier it is 105 km and about 1 h 48 min by road to Chefchaouen per Rome2Rio (Wikivoyage says 2.5 to 3 hours), which slots straight into the Fes leg. KimKim's northern 10-day route shows the balance: 2 nights in Tangier, 2 in Chefchaouen, 3 in Fes, 1 in Rabat and 1 in Casablanca.

A full 14 days might run Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fes, the Sahara, Marrakech, Essaouira and back to Casablanca, with the desert legs as in the ten-day version. KimKim notes that 11 or more days is what adds Casablanca, Essaouira or Erg Chebbi to the core trip, so two weeks lets you keep all of them without dropping nights in Fes or Marrakech.

The Essaouira Leg in Detail

Plan two nights in Essaouira to keep the pace sane. The road distance is 176.1 km at 2 h 24 min driving, but buses and coaches take closer to 3 hours, and one travel guide puts the same trip at 3 to 4 hours. The town had 82,962 residents in 2024 and its four-day Gnaoua Festival draws around 450,000 to 500,000 spectators, so accommodation tightens badly if your dates land on the festival. Essaouira also has its own airport, 16 km southeast of town, with scheduled service, which means you can fly out of the coast instead of backtracking to Marrakech.

Budget the leg at the coach fare of 80 dirhams each way, or 450 to 800 dirhams for a whole grand taxi from Marrakech if you would rather not wait for departures. Essaouira rounds out a two-week Morocco itinerary because it trades the inland heat for Atlantic air.

The Tangier Leg in Detail

Tangier is Morocco's second largest city with 1,275,428 residents in 2024, and it was an international zone from 1923 until independence in 1956. Two or three nights here work at either end of a two-week route. The Al Boraq high-speed train, running at up to 320 km/h on the Tangier to Kenitra section, connects Tangier with Casablanca and Rabat, and Wikivoyage lists Tangier to Fez connections at about 3.5 hours running almost hourly.

Chefchaouen, founded in 1471 and sitting at 564 m in the Rif Mountains, is 105 km and about 1 h 48 min from Tangier by road per Rome2Rio, while Wikivoyage gives 2.5 to 3 hours. From there Fes is 194.3 km and about 3 h 28 min by road per Rome2Rio, with other guides saying about 4 hours. For the desert from Fes, KimKim counts 288 miles (463 km) and about 7 hours by private transfer, passing Ifrane an hour out of Fes and the Ziz Valley two hours past Ifrane. A Fes to Errachidia flight of about 1 hour plus a 2-hour transfer to Merzouga shortens that to roughly 3 hours of travel.

Train, Car or Tour Package

Morocco's rail network is strong in the north and weak in the south, and that single fact decides most routing questions. ONCF runs about 2,200 km of standard gauge track and carried 52.8 million passengers in 2023, but there is no rail to Ouarzazate or the south and east.

Where the Train Beats the Road

The table compares the main legs of a classic Morocco itinerary by train and by road, using Rome2Rio and Wikivoyage figures. Road times are Rome2Rio driving times without stops.

The Al Boraq is the standout: it opened in November 2018, runs at up to 320 km/h and cut Tangier to Casablanca from 4 h 45 min to about 2 h 10 to 2 h 17 min. A 430 km Kenitra to Marrakech high-speed extension began construction in April and is targeted for 2029, which will eventually change this table.

A car wins on flexibility in the north where distances are short, and in the south the choice is a car or a Supratours bus. On the Marrakech to Fes leg the road at 5 h 11 min beats the train at about 6.5 hours, though the train lets you work or sleep. Some sources also give the Marrakech to Fes train as a 7-hour journey, so expect variation between timetables.

Where There Is No Train: the Desert

The decisive gap is the south. There is no rail to Ouarzazate or anywhere in the south and east, which depend on ONCF's Supratours buses. Marrakech to Merzouga is 534.1 km and about 9 h 27 min of driving per Rome2Rio, while KimKim puts it at 560 km and 10 to 13 hours, and a desert-distance guide at 8 to 10 hours, usually split over several days. Public transport does reach the dunes: Wikivoyage lists a Supratours bus from Marrakech at 07:30 for 160 dirhams and an overnight bus from Fez to Rissani at 165 dirhams leaving 21:30 and arriving 07:00. CTM buses only go as far as Erfoud and Rissani, and from Rissani a shared grand taxi to Merzouga costs 12 to 15 dirhams.

That works for patient independent travellers, but it burns days. This is why the tour packages on Morocco tour packages cover the desert legs by private vehicle: the same Marrakech to Merzouga drive becomes a route with stops at Ait Ben Haddou and the gorges instead of a single long bus day. The 4-Day Luxury Desert Tour to Fes and the 3-Day Merzouga Sahara Desert Tour both cover this trainless stretch.

The Same Route as a Package

The routes above follow the same arc as the 7 to 11 day packages on this site. The table compares the card prices in US dollars, the lengths and the start and end cities of the 7 to 11 day tours, taken from each tour's own listing.

The 7 to 11 Day Packages Side by Side

The 10 and 11 day versions match the night counts that KimKim recommends for a well-paced trip: 8 to 10 days for Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, Merzouga, Ouarzazate and Marrakesh, with the 11th day adding a city such as Casablanca.

Read the inclusions before comparing prices. The 10-Day Morocco Desert Tour via Imperial Cities lists breakfast and dinner but not lunch, no monument entrance fees, and the booking platform adds $302 in extra charges at checkout on top of its $2,403 price. The 10-Day Best of Morocco from Casablanca at $1,269 includes entrance fees on its accommodation tiers, but its lowest price may be the tour-only tier with no accommodation. The 11-Day Private Morocco Tour Package at $2,518 excludes lunches, drinks and tips.

Matching a Package to Your Days

If your Morocco itinerary is 7 days, the 7-Day Private Casablanca to Marrakech Tour runs Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Fes, the Ziz Valley, the Sahara and Ait Ben Haddou in one pass, with a night in a luxury desert camp with private bathrooms and an entrance fee listed as included. Its meal coverage is unclear in the listing, so ask before booking. If you land in Tangier by ferry or flight, the 7-Day Tangier to Marrakech Tour style route, sold as the 7-Day Tangier to Marrakech Tour, starts north and finishes in Marrakech.

For 10 days, the choice is between a Casablanca loop that returns to its start and a Casablanca to Marrakech line that does not backtrack. For anything longer, the 11-day private package adds Meknes and Chefchaouen to the desert loop and ends in Marrakech, which matches the two-week logic above minus the coast. For a two-week trip you can also combine a full package with extra nights on your own, for example adding two Essaouira nights at about 3 hours by coach from Marrakech.

Itinerary Tips and Pitfalls

Five moves that make a Morocco itinerary work, and four mistakes that waste days, each grounded in the drive times and prices in this guide.

Do

  • Do split the Marrakech to Merzouga leg over at least two days, because Rome2Rio puts the road at 534.1 km and about 9 h 27 min of driving and KimKim at 560 km and 10 to 13 hours.
  • Do use the Al Boraq for the Tangier to Casablanca leg, because the train takes about 2 h 10 to 2 h 17 min against about 3 h 30 min on the 337.2 km road.
  • Do fly into Casablanca Mohammed V or Marrakesh Menara, because they served 10,449,372 and about 9.3 million passengers in 2024 and Casablanca Mohammed V has an hourly Al Bidaoui train from 04:00 to 23:00.
  • Do carry cash before Merzouga, because the town has only one ATM at its north entrance and Wikivoyage advises drawing money in Erfoud or Rissani.
  • Do time the desert for October to April, because Wikipedia names those the best months for Erg Chebbi, while inland Saharan summer maximums exceed 44 C.

Don't

  • Don't plan the south around trains, because there is no rail to Ouarzazate or anywhere in the south and east and the region depends on Supratours buses.
  • Don't leave Marrakech and the desert on the same day, because the drive is 534 to 560 km and one guide says Merzouga needs at least three days to do properly.
  • Don't assume a package price covers everything, because typical listings such as the 10-day desert tour at $2,403 exclude lunches, monument entrance fees and add $302 in checkout charges.
  • Don't underestimate the Fes to Chefchaouen leg in a northern loop, because the 194.3 km of mountain road takes about 3 h 28 min by car and about 4 h 15 min by CTM bus.

Morocco Itinerary Questions

How many days do I need for a Morocco itinerary that includes the Sahara?

KimKim says 8 to 10 days is a well-paced trip for Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, Merzouga, Ouarzazate and Marrakesh, and 11 or more days adds Casablanca, Essaouira or Erg Chebbi. The 10-Day Morocco Desert Tour via Imperial Cities is one 10-day option.

Is a 7-day Morocco itinerary enough time?

Seven days fits the loop if you accept long drives, because Marrakech to Merzouga alone is roughly 534 to 560 km and 9 to 13 hours of driving. The 7-Day Private Casablanca to Marrakech Tour shows how the days can be ordered.

Can I build a Morocco itinerary without renting a car?

Yes for the north, because trains link Casablanca, Rabat, Fes and Meknes, and the Al Boraq reaches Tangier in about 2 h 10 to 2 h 17 min from Casablanca. The south has no rail at all, which is why most travellers hand that stretch to a desert tour package.

Which cities should I fly into for a Morocco itinerary?

The main airports are Casablanca Mohammed V, Marrakesh Menara, Fez-Saiss, Tangier Ibn Battouta and Rabat-Sale. Casablanca works for the classic loop and Tangier for a north-to-south route like the 7-Day Tangier to Marrakech Tour.

How does a two-week Morocco itinerary differ from ten days?

Two weeks adds Essaouira, 176.1 km and about 2 h 24 min from Marrakech, and the Tangier and Chefchaouen north. KimKim notes 11 or more days is what adds cities beyond the core loop, and the 11-Day Private Morocco Tour Package covers the inland version.

What does the desert leg of a Morocco itinerary cost by public transport?

Wikivoyage lists the Supratours bus from Marrakech to Merzouga at 160 dirhams and the overnight Fez to Rissani bus at 165 dirhams, plus a 12 to 15 dirhams shared taxi from Rissani. A packaged alternative such as the 4-Day Luxury Desert Tour to Fes starts at $341 per person with meals at the camp.

If seven days is your window, the 7-Day Private Casablanca to Marrakech Tour runs the full loop from Rabat and Chefchaouen to the Sahara and Ait Ben Haddou for $1,511 per person, priced for 2 to 3 travelers.
