Merzouga: The Village on the Edge of the Erg Chebbi Dunes
Merzouga is the small Moroccan village that most people mean when they say the Sahara. It sits on the western edge of the Erg Chebbi dune field, where sand ridges up to 150 m tall rise straight out of stony desert. This guide covers where Merzouga is, the villages and sights around it, and every way to get there from Marrakech, Fes and Errachidia. It also links the desert tours that sleep here, from a 3-day budget run to 10-day private packages. For camp choices in depth, see the luxury desert camp guide linked below. The bookable tours are compared on Morocco package tours.

Quick answer Merzouga at a glance
Merzouga is a village in southeast Morocco, about 55 to 60 km from Erfoud and roughly 50 km from the Algerian border, sitting on the western edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. The dunes run about 28 km north to south and rise up to 150 m. Erg Chebbi is the most developed dune field in Morocco.
Key takeaways
- The cheapest way to sleep in the dunes is the 3-Day Merzouga Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech at $129 per person.
- Want a fourth day? The 4-Day Luxury Sahara Tour from Marrakech costs $182 per person and reaches the same dunes.
- For tents, bathrooms and what camps actually include, read the guide to a luxury desert camp Merzouga.
- October to April are the best months at Erg Chebbi, per Wikipedia. Summer daytime heat passes 40 C inland.
Where Merzouga Is and What Is There
Merzouga sits in Errachidia Province in the Draa-Tafilalet region, at 31.099 N, 4.012 W. Neither the village population nor its exact altitude appears in an authoritative source, so both are not stated here.
Location and the Erg Chebbi Dunes
Merzouga stands on the western edge of Erg Chebbi, a dune field Wikipedia measures at about 28 km north to south and 5 to 7 km east to west, at an elevation of 730 m. Wikivoyage puts the crest of the dunes at 808 m above sea level, so both figures appear here. The dunes rise about 150 m above the surrounding stony plain, and a travel guide puts the whole field at more than 100 square km, stretching toward the Algerian border.
Distances around the village come with small conflicts. Wikipedia's Merzouga article gives Rissani as 35 km northwest and Erfoud as 55 km away, while its Erg Chebbi article and Wikivoyage give about 40 km and about 60 km. Wikivoyage places Errachidia about 130 km to the north, a drive of around 2 hours, and Wikipedia puts the Algerian border roughly 50 km away. The nearest town of significant size is Rissani.
The dunes themselves are the reason people come. The Grand Dune climb is the main sunset and sunrise hike, and the far edge of the dune field lies about 5 km straight across from the village side. One travel writer measured the walk from hotels in town to the far dunes at about 2 hours out and 1.5 hours back. Camps sit at the edge of the dunes 5 to 7 km from town, and beyond them the ground turns to rocky black desert. Wildlife listed by Wikivoyage includes desert foxes, gerbils, Algerian sand lizards, Egyptian nightjar and Tristram's warbler.
History here is thin but real. French Foreign Legion fortifications date to 1916 to 1932 after the battles of Tafilalet. Flash floods on 26 May 2006 displaced 1,200 people, killed three and destroyed 140 houses and hotels. Unlicensed desert camps near the village were closed in 2019 over environmental concerns, and Wikipedia notes that rising visitor numbers have caused littering in the dunes. The Merzouga Rally motorsport event has run since 2010.
Villages, Lake and Market Towns Around Merzouga
Merzouga is not alone on this plain. Wikipedia lists the nearby villages as Takoujt 1.5 km away, Tanamoust 3 km, Hassilabied 4 km, Khamlia 7 km and Tisserdmine 15 km. Hassi Labied, spelled Hassilabied by Wikipedia, is the small village 4 km before Merzouga on the asphalt road, and a taxi there from town costs about 50 dirhams per Wikivoyage.
Khamlia is the southern gateway to the Sahara, right on the edge of the dunes. Its residents are descended from Senegalese arrivals and the village is known for Gnawa music, with visits arranged through local guides. Khamlia also hosts an annual Gnawa festival, also called Sadaka, held over three nights each summer.
West of the village lies Dayet Srji, a salt lake also called Yasmina Lake. Wikivoyage recorded it with no water for at least two years as of 2018. Then, after unusually heavy rain in October 2024, the lake refilled, and Euronews reported its highest water level since the 1970s and 1980s. What has happened since that refill is not stated in the sources, so treat a lake visit as a bonus and not a certainty.
The table below pulls together the places most visitors combine with a dunes stay, with distances from the sources above and market days from Wikivoyage. The Rissani souk days conflict between sources, so both lists are given.
The Rissani souk runs on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday per Wikivoyage, though another source lists Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Rissani had 20,469 residents in 2004 and holds the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, great-grandfather of the founder of the Alaouite dynasty. It grew important to trans-Saharan trade after nearby Sijilmassa was destroyed in the 14th century. Sijilmasa itself functioned from about 757 to 1393 as the terminus of a trans-Saharan route.
Erfoud, at 807 m elevation with 28,912 residents in 2024, is the fossil town. The Sahara here lay under water 500 million years ago, which is why Erfoud sells trilobite and ammonite fossils. In February 2013 the Austrian Space Forum even ran Mars simulation tests nearby, with spacesuit simulators and rovers.
| Place | What it is | Distance |
|---|---|---|

| Khamlia | Gnawa music village on the edge of the dunes, annual three-night summer festival | 7 km from Merzouga |
| Dayet Srji | Salt lake west of Merzouga, dry for years then refilled after heavy rain in October 2024 | West of the village, exact distance not stated |
| Rissani | Nearest large town, souk on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday per Wikivoyage, Moulay Ali Cherif mausoleum | 35 km per Wikipedia, about 40 km per Wikivoyage |

Getting to Merzouga
There is no train to Merzouga and no airport in the village. Every arrival is by road, by bus plus taxi, or by a flight to Errachidia followed by a transfer.
Routes, Distances and Times
The two long drives come with conflicts worth knowing before you plan. Rome2Rio puts Marrakech to Merzouga at 534.1 km and about 9 h 27 min of driving, against a straight line of 480 km. KimKim puts the same run at 560 km and 10 to 13 hours, and a desert-distance guide says 8 to 10 hours, so the honest range is wide. From Fes, Rome2Rio gives 457 km and about 7 h 14 min while KimKim gives 463 km and about 7 hours by private transfer, via Ifrane an hour from Fes, the Ziz Valley two hours past Ifrane and Errachidia about two hours further. Global Highlights recommends a stopover at Midelt, at 1,521 m, on that route.
By bus, Wikivoyage lists a Supratours service from Marrakech at 07:30 and one from Fes at 22:30 daily, both ending in Merzouga village for 160 dirhams. CTM buses only go as far as Erfoud and Rissani and not to Merzouga itself. From Rissani, a shared grand taxi to Merzouga costs 12 to 15 dirhams and leaves about every 30 minutes, while a private one costs 60 dirhams, or 100 dirhams before sunrise. From Erfoud the shared taxi is 25 dirhams every 1 to 2 hours.
Flying gets you closest fastest. Errachidia's Moulay Ali Cherif Airport has weekend Royal Air Moroc flights to Casablanca per Wikivoyage, and lies about 70 to 80 km north of Erfoud depending on which Wikivoyage figure you take. KimKim prices the Fes option as a flight of about 1 hour plus a 2-hour transfer, a 3-hour alternative to the 7-hour drive. Rome2Rio shows Marrakech to Merzouga as 6 h 23 min fly-plus-bus via Errachidia, against 9 h 27 min by road, and lists the Errachidia to Merzouga bus at 3 h 10 min.
One practical warning from Wikivoyage: Merzouga has only one ATM, at its north entrance, so carry cash from Erfoud or Rissani. Budget guesthouse doubles run 170 to 300 dirhams and camping 25 dirhams, with upscale hotels from €44 to €50 or more per person with half board.
| From | How | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech | Drive or private transfer | 534.1 km per Rome2Rio, 560 km per KimKim | 9 h 27 min per Rome2Rio, 10 to 13 h per KimKim, 8 to 10 h per a desert guide |
| Marrakech | Supratours bus, 07:30 daily, 160 dirhams | Not stated leg by leg | Not stated |
| Fes | Drive or private transfer | 457 km per Rome2Rio, 463 km per KimKim | About 7 h both sources |
| Fes | Supratours bus, 22:30 daily, 160 dirhams | Not stated | Overnight |
| Fes | Fly to Errachidia then transfer | Not stated | About 3 h total, flight about 1 h plus 2 h transfer |
| Errachidia | Drive or bus | About 130 km | About 2 h by road, 3 h 10 min by bus per Rome2Rio |
| Rissani | Shared grand taxi, 12 to 15 dirhams, private 60 dirhams | About 35 to 40 km | Taxi every 30 minutes, not stated journey time |
Why Most Visitors Come on a Tour
A one-way run to Merzouga is a full day on the road from either Marrakech or Fes, and a desert-distance guide says the village needs at least three days to do properly. That is why nearly everyone arrives on a multi-day loop rather than by public transport. The tours on this site all sleep here or in Erg Chebbi and handle the dunes, the camel ride and the camp in one price.
The cheapest entry point is the 3-Day Merzouga Sahara Desert Tour at $129 per person, a shared or private 3-day run from Marrakech with camel rides at sunset and sunrise and a night in a Berber camp in Erg Chebbi. Its breakfasts and dinners are included but lunch and drinks are not, and the Ait Ben Haddou local guide costs €2 per person. From the same city, the 4-Day Luxury Desert Tour to Fes at $341 per person carries on to Fes instead of doubling back.
Longer loops add the imperial cities. The 10-Day Morocco Tour with Desert Camp costs $1,227 per person from Casablanca, and the 7-Day Tangier to Marrakech Tour at $1,537 per person includes sandboarding along with its desert night. If you want to compare every option side by side, the homepage comparison table lines up all the Morocco tour packages with what each one includes and leaves out.
Note that no tour on this site includes lunch unless its own record says so, and monument entrance fees are mostly extra. Check each card before booking.

Things to Do in Merzouga
The village is small, but the dunes of Erg Chebbi next door carry most of the activities. Nearly everything below starts from Merzouga or from Hassi Labied, 4 km before town.
Ride a Camel at Sunset
The camel trek is the classic Merzouga activity, usually the transfer from town to a desert camp at the edge of the dunes. Camps sit 5 to 7 km from the village, and the ride takes about an hour, leaving one to two hours before sunset. The dromedary walks at about 4 km/h, so it is a slow climb over the sand.
A 4x4 transfer is the alternative if you would rather not ride. Camps in depth, from shared-bathroom tents to hotel-standard luxury, are covered in the guide to a luxury desert camp in Merzouga.
Climb the Grand Dune
Erg Chebbi stretches about 28 km north to south and 5 to 7 km wide, with dunes rising up to 150 m above the plain and reaching about 808 m above sea level. Wikivoyage calls the Grand Dune climb the main sunset and sunrise hike, with the far edge of the dune field about 5 km straight across. One measured walk from village hotels to the far dunes took about 2 hours out and 1.5 hours back, so most people climb at dusk and return for the night.
Start before sunset and you get the light and cooler sand underfoot.
Sandboarding the Slopes
Sandboarding is one of the things to do on the dunes near a camp. The 7-Day Tangier to Marrakech Tour, priced at $1,537, lists sandboarding among its desert-night activities. Budget guesthouse doubles in the village run 170 to 300 dirhams.
Go early or late, because summer daytime heat reaches 107 F on the dunes.
Explore by 4x4 or Quad
Wikivoyage lists 4WD tours around 800 dirhams per 2 hours and quad tours from 400 dirhams per person. Khamlia is 7 km away, Dayet Srji lies west of the village and the ground beyond the camps is rocky black desert. Note that some camps on the far side of Erg Chebbi need a 4x4 or camel to reach at all, which can cost more than the tent itself.
Hear the Gnawa of Khamlia
Khamlia lies 7 km from Merzouga and is known as the southern gateway to the Sahara. Its Gnawa musicians descend from Senegalese families, and visits are arranged through local guides. Wikipedia records an annual Gnawa festival there, also called Sadaka, held over three nights each summer.
Stargaze Over the Erg
Rissani, the closest town of any size, is about 35 km away. One caution from camp reviews: the temperature drops quickly after sunset, and winter nights in the dunes fall below freezing, so bring layers even when the day reached 30 C. October highs run about 30 C, dropping toward 18 C in January.
Dayet Srji and Rissani on a Rest Day
Dayet Srji, the salt lake west of town, was recorded with no water for at least two years as of 2018, and heavy rain in October 2024 refilled it, with Euronews reporting its highest water level since the 1970s and 1980s. Water in the desert is not guaranteed, so treat a full lake as luck. For market day, Rissani's souk runs Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday, with Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday given by other sources, so Thursday is safe.
Rissani sits about 35 km away, and a shared grand taxi costs 12 to 15 dirhams. On the way, Erfoud, about 55 to 60 km north, sells trilobite and ammonite fossils from a seabed that covered the Sahara 500 million years ago. For the full picture of the village and transport, see the main Merzouga guide.

Merzouga Tips
Do
- Do carry cash from Erfoud or Rissani, because Wikivoyage says Merzouga has only one ATM, at its north entrance.
- Do pick October to April for the dunes, because Wikipedia names those the best months for Erg Chebbi and summer daytime heat reaches 107 F.
- Do pack warm layers even in spring, because winter nights in the dunes drop below freezing and the temperature falls fast after sunset.
- Do plan at least two or three nights, because guides describe Merzouga as needing at least three days to do properly and the drive alone is a full day each way.
- Do tip your driver and guide if the service was good, because one source suggests 100 to 150 dirhams per day for full-day guides and drivers and tipping is customary though not mandatory.
Don't
- Don't book a tour expecting lunch, because most desert packages here leave lunch out, so check each card.
- Don't rely on CTM buses to reach the village, because they stop at Erfoud and Rissani and only Supratours runs the last leg to Merzouga.
- Don't leave litter in the dunes, because rising visitor numbers have already caused littering and waste problems, and unlicensed camps were closed in 2019 over environmental concerns.
- Don't plan a June to August visit, because Saharan maximums exceed 44 C and one writer recorded 44 C on the road to Merzouga.

Is going to Merzouga worth it?
For dunes, yes. Erg Chebbi rises up to 150 m and runs about 28 km long, the most developed dune field in Morocco, and the sunset camel and camp night are the reasons most people come. The cheapest way in is the 3-Day Merzouga Sahara Desert Tour at $129.
What is the closest airport to Merzouga?
Moulay Ali Cherif Airport serves Errachidia, which is about 130 km or 2 hours north of Merzouga by road. Wikivoyage lists weekend Royal Air Maroc flights to Casablanca from there. The Fes to Merzouga route can also be flown in about 1 hour plus a 2-hour transfer.
How long should I stay in Merzouga?
At least two nights. A camp visit needs one night in the dunes, and travel guides say the area needs at least three days to do properly, which leaves time for Khamlia 7 km away and the Rissani souk. A good structure is shown in the 4-Day Luxury Sahara Tour from Marrakech at $182.
Can you walk to the dunes from Merzouga village?
Yes, but it is a hike. Camps and the main dune edge sit 5 to 7 km from town, and one measured walk took about 2 hours out and 1.5 hours back. Most people take the camel or a 4x4, as on the 8-Day Casablanca to Marrakech Tour at $1,231, where the luxury camp is reached by camel.
What is there to do besides the camel ride?
Climb the Grand Dune at sunset, sandboard the slopes, take a 4x4 circuit at around 800 dirhams for 2 hours, hear the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia and stargaze after dark. If you want the dunes plus the cities, the 10-Day Morocco Desert Tour via Imperial Cities at $2,403 (the booking platform adds $302 in extra charges at checkout) adds Fes and Marrakech.
When is the best time to visit Merzouga?
October to April. Merzouga highs run about 30 C in October and 18 C in January, while July reaches about 42 C, and one weather scorecard rates April 9.3 and August 2.5 out of 10. More on seasons is in the guide to the best time to visit Morocco.
